{Network Operating System }
{Version 4.0}
More and more business people are making the connection that, for
affordability, reliability and efficiency, Artisoft's LANtastic is the
networking solution. In fact, our network has gained such a following that
it was awarded the 1991 LAN Times Readers' Choice for peer-to-peer
network operating systems. And we couldn't be prouder.
After all, we designed LANtastic to make the productive power of a
full-featured LAN accessible to everyone who wants to streamline computer
operations. And whether you're connecting two PCs or 300 you can rest
assured that you are buying into a product that will grow as you grow.
We at Artisoft are committed to developing innovative products that
anticipate the needs of business people like you.
{"LANtastic is easy to use and administer, and inexpensive in price}
{and RAM. It also gives dynamite performance. In fact, it can handle 100}
{users using typical DOS-based applications on a single server. Its
{optional voice feature and upcoming Windows capabilities can add extra
{dimensions to the network, and the security features are very
{well-implemented. LANtastic is a must-see if you're considering a
{peer-to-peer network."} --PC Magazine, June 25, 1991.
Just look at how smart our network is! While many networks gobble up
huge amounts of your PC's RAM, which usually means that you have to
purchase extended memory, LANtastic leaves you plenty of room for even
your most RAM-hungry applications. In fact, it's the most RAM-efficient
network operating system you'll find -- taking as little as 12K per
workstation and 40K per server.
LANtastic saves you money, too, giving you everything you need to get
your network up and running affordably. Plus, you can share all those
expensive peripherals -- not buy more of them. Better yet, because
LANtastic is a peer-to-peer network, you won't have to spend thousands
on a dedicated server machine.
Here's why we've won a PC Magazine Editors' Choice Award three
years in a row:
{"Reviewing LANtastic's past history makes it no surprise that Version 4.0}
{is better than ever. With its improved disk-caching abilities and the}
{upcoming Windows version, LANtastic is faster and easier to use than its}
{successful predecessors, a winner in its own right."} -- PC Magazine,
June 25, 1991.
{LANcache boosts network speed
{"LANcache, LANtastic's disk-caching program, is one of the fastest
{caches we tested. Version 4.0 of LANtastic has been improved to cache
{with expanded, extended, or conventional memory."} -- PC Magazine,
June 25, 1991.
LANtastic's disk caching lets you process data much faster than many
other networks because it caches both reads and writes, reducing the
number of physical accesses to the disk. Designed to be fully compatible
with Microsoft Windows, LANcache will release its own memory to
Windows to allow better performance when it detects that Windows is
running. LANcache will also allow you to cache some memory and leave
the rest to Windows.
{Unloadable from memory
If you ever need to free up what little RAM LANtastic uses, you can remove
LANtastic's network software from memory without rebooting.
{One disk, a few commands, and you're ready to go
LANtastic is not only easy to install, it also lets you set up your whole
network -- servers, workstations, and user accounts -- when you install the
system software, so you can be up and running in minutes.
{Multiple levels of security
{"Security in a LANtastic network is tight as a drum if you choose." }-- PC
Magazine, June 25, 1991.
You can prevent unauthorized entry into a system with LANtastic's
"Username with Password" feature and limit any user's access to certain
hours, days of the week, etc. You can even individually assign users any
or all of the following privileges: read, write, modify, create, delete and
rename files; make, delete and lookup directories; execute programs and
change file attributes.
{Electronic mail with Chat and pop-up notification
One easy menu lets you use LANtastic's Chat feature to send text
messages back and forth between two computers -- just like a
conversation. Another menu lets you send and save messages for reading
at a later time. And LANPUP alerts you immediately whenever you receive
a new message.
{Adds voice to your PC communications
Because LANtastic has sound capabilities built into the network, you can
send voice messages across your LANtastic network if you install the
optional Artisoft Sounding Board adapters. And it's as easy as picking up
the telephone-style handset provided with each Sounding Board, bringing
up a handy on-screen menu, and talking. You can use the Voice Chat
feature to carry on a realtime conversation, or your voice message can be
saved in digital format for playback later -- just like regular e-mail.
{UPS support safeguards your network
If the UPS connected to your server signals that a shutdown is imminent,
LANtastic will warn all of your network users, give them time to log off,
then close all the network files so that no one loses any work. If the power
returns, LANtastic NOS will tell the users that there's nothing to worry
about.
{Remote server processing and shutdown
With the NET RUN command, you can remotely issue commands to a
network server. So while you're at your workstation, writing a synopsis of
your research findings, you can command your fastest server to sort the
research data. You can also remotely shut down a server or schedule its
shutdown for a future time. Users will be warned at key times prior to the
shutdown.
{ALONE sets up a dedicated server
ALONE allows you to dedicate a PC to service the network with
unsurpassed performance. You can run this stand-alone server program
on demand -- with one simple command -- and escape it just as easily. By
side-stepping DOS, ALONE allows true multitasking on a network server
so that it can perform more simultaneous user requests with no loss in
performance.
{Despools to multiple printers simultaneously
Unlike many other LANs -- which only despool to one printer at a time --
LANtastic automatically despools to two or more printers simultaneously.
LANtastic also allows for the creation of printer definition files to define
draft, letter quality, different fonts, banner pages, tab expansion and other
printer options.
{Audit trails track network activity
LANtastic's audit file feature monitors all access to subdirectories and
printers, letting you know who used a PC, printer or other device, when
they used it, and how long they used it. It can even tell you if users
try to enter a directory to which they've been denied access. These
features provide you with accurate information for billing, as well as help
in maintaining security.
{Cleanest CD-ROM networking available
No LAN surpasses LANtastic's ability to support CD-ROM drives with
Microsoft extension software. Maybe that's why PC Magazine awarded
LANtastic an additional Editors' Choice (February 1990) just for its ability
to network CD-ROMs. While other LANs require that you load the
CD-ROM's extension software on every remote computer that needs to
access the drive, LANtastic only requires that you load the software on the
computer to which the CD-ROM drive is attached.
{Full support of Microsoft Windows 3.0 and above
LANtastic supports Microsoft Windows' real, standard and enhanced
modes on both non-dedicated servers and work-stations. And if you
purchase LANtastic for Windows, you'll be able to utilize Windows'
pull-down menus, icons and on-line help for both NET and NET_MGR
functions.
{"Artisoft continues to take a good thing and make it better."} -- PC
Magazine, June 25, 1991.
LANtastic makes networking so easy that you'll soon be taking it for
granted. You'll be able to edit and proofread your co-workers' documents
without leaving your desk. Balancing your books will be easier because
your entire accounting department can share the same data base.
Inventory management will be completely streamlined because everyone
on the network can access inventory records and track products from
when they are received as raw material, to when they are shipped as
finished products.
In fact, the only regret you may have after you choose LANtastic is that
you didn't install it last year, last month, even last week. Don't wait
any longer. Call 602-293-6363 or fax 602-293-8065 and put the power of
LANtastic to work for you.
LANtastic for Windows software completes the connection.
With the separate purchase of LANtastic for Windows, you can transform
the award-winning utilities in Artisoft's DOS-based LANtastic Network
Operating System into Windows' simple, elegant framework of pull-down
menus, icons and online help.
LANtastic for Windows is a network utility that, when used in conjunction
with LANtastic NOS 4.0 and above, can be run totally inside of Windows
3.0 and above. So you can use all of LANtastic's NET and NET_MGR
utilities without exiting Windows. In fact, you can open multiple
windows to perform several different tasks -- e-mail, chat, monitoring print
queues, security administration, and single or multiple server activities all
at the same time!
